Dear Sunshine Families,
Last week: We had a lot to get done last week. The kids have been working on a special gift; some of those went home last week and we will finish the rest up this week. We also painted candy canes with peppermint paint; it smelled so yummy! Those are hanging in our tree in class. The peppermint play dough as also a big hit!
This week: We will continue with holiday projects, We will decorate our classroom door and make our salt dough since we didn't get to it last week. We will do some cutting practice on a gingerbread house cutting page and practice writing holiday words.
Winter Concert: The winter concert was great! It was such a fun and festive night. Thank you to everyone that was able to come and support your little ones in their first Little Acorn performance. The book fair was also a great success! Thank you so much to those that purchased books for the classroom. And by buying books through the book fair we get points to buy more books for the school; it's a win win!
Winter Parties: Our last two day before break will be low key, we will get together as a school to watch The Snowman and have a fun snack. On Friday we will visit the Star class for an exciting project!
Food Drive: This is the last week to collect food items! These food boxes will be delivered to those in need in our community. Thank you for your donations!
Winter Break: This is our last week of class before winter break. We will return to school on January 5th. I hope everyone enjoys time with family and is able to relax and enjoy the holidays!

Submit up to 20 grocery receipts within a rolling 7 day period. Parents can scan receipts from restaurants, department stores, hardware stores, craft stores, electronics, sports stores, office supply, bookstores and café’s. Dear Sunshine Families,
Last week: Thank you for being patient with our school closure last week. Our weather is often unpredictable and we want to make sure everyone is home safe if the streets are icy. We make the decision to close based on the Vancouver School District and the latest weather reports. If you haven't signed up for Remind you can do that with Katie in the preschool office.
This week: We have a lot to get done this week! We will be busy working on last week's projects; the kids family houses, log cabins and stories about the people living in their home. We will also start on some really cute turkey projects and make thanksgiving cards for the 'grandmas and grandpas' over at Kindred. We will walk over there Wednesday and Thursday to sing and deliver the holiday cards.
Family Fun Night: Family Fun Night is the Friday, November 21st! This is a free family event that includes many different holiday craft tables, cookie decorating and face painting. If anyone is interested on getting some volunteer hours we could use some help running our craft table, we will need help making sure there are enough supplies out and assisting families as they come do the craft.
Fundraisers:
Our next fundraiser is our annual bake sale. The sale will run during class times on Monday November 24 and Tuesday November 25. We are looking for donations of baked goods to be brought in those days.
LAPSK Board Meet and Greet: Our meet and greet was canceled due to the weather; we have another one scheduled in January and we are looking to see if we can fit another one in before then.
Winter Concert: we have begun practicing for our winter concert! This is held in the evening on December 8th. The concert starts at 6:00, mark your calendars because it is a great night!

Dear Sunshine Families,
Last week: Conferences went great! It was so nice to sit with all you of you and chat about your kids and the fun things we are doing in the Sunshine Class. If we were unable to meet last week let's talk and make a plan for after school in the coming weeks.
This week: We don't have class on Tuesday in observance of Veteran's Day. In class we will begin talking about friends and families, the holiday season is a time to celebrate the people we care for so we will be talking about those special people in our lives and why we love them. We will also learn about homes; everyone has one but many are different so we will look at all the different kinds of homes in the world. We will read In a People House and The Little House.
LAPSK Board Meet and Greet: This week on Thursday you have the opportunity to stop in the Conrad room (the room by the upstairs drinking fountain) to meet our wonderful preschool board members. This is an opportunity to meet them, learn about what they do and share thoughts and ideas with them.
Family Fun Night: The date of our family fun night has been changed to Nov 21st. This is a Friday rather than the Thursday it originally was. Our class is helping with a fun turkey project. We already have help prepping the project, now we are in need of some volunteers to help run the table during the event. This is a free event and so much fun, I hope everyone can make it!
Fundraisers: Our next fundraiser is our annual bake sale. The sale will run during class times on Monday November 24 and Tuesday November 25. We are looking for donations of baked goods to be brought in those days.

If we are closed for the day I will send out an email as soon as I know, the preschool phone will have a message stating that we are closed. Dear Sunshine Families,
I am sending out this week's newsletter early because I will be out of town this weekend. I hope you all had a safe and fun Halloween! Don't forget this weekend is daylight savings, set your clocks back an hour and take advantage of the extra time.
Last Week: The week was so busy, we worked very hard on assessments. The kids did great and were so excited to work on tracing, cutting and shapes recognition. I am so excited to share all of this and other great work we are doing in class during conferences. Our class parties were great! It was so fun to see everyone dressed up. They had a great time parading through the school.
This week: We will finish up our pumpkin print paintings and create spiders! We will also do our marble paint project since we did not get to it last week. Since we only have 3 days in class we will focus on finishing up our October/Fall Units. The following weeks we will start talking about Being Thankful, Friends and Families.
Conferences: Conferences are being held this week; I am able to do some after class Tuesday and Wednesday. Thursday we will not have class and will spend the day doing conferences. If you haven't had a chance to sign up the sheet is still out in the hall. Friday we will not have class as the church has an event in the church.
Family Fun Night: Our fist family fun night is coming up on November 20th. We will host a make and take holiday craft night. This was so much fun last year and a great way to get in the holiday spirit. This is also a great opportunity to get some volunteer hours. We may have some prep work that can be done at home so If you are interested in helping out that way, let me know. They will also be help needed to set up and take down the night of the event.
Word Wall: The letter this week is "G". Kids can bring anything starting with the letter "G"!

Dear Sunshine Families,
Last Week: I hope everyone that made it out the Velvet Acres enjoyed it! We lucked out with the rain; even if we got a little muddy! This was a new farm for us and we'd love to hear feedback from you to help us plan for next year's trip!
This week: We will talk about farms and farm animals in class this week. Velvet Acres is a working farm with dairy cows and acres of fresh vegetables. We will talk about what we saw there and create our own red barns with farm animals. We will read Click, Clack, Moo and Mrs. Wishy Washy's Farm.
Social/emotional: This week we will work one on one with each child doing number and letter assessments, writing practice and cutting practice. We are getting ready or conferences in November. This is a great time for Vanessa and I to work individually with the kids; once assessments are done we will have a better understanding of where the kids are and what things we will focus on for the rest of the year!
Halloween Parties: Next week will celebrate the season with class parties Thursday and Friday. We will make mini pizzas for snack; I will have a sign up sheet out for donations of pizza ingredients. Kids are welcome to dress up but please keep weapons at home. We will parade around the school and walk over to Kindred to parade for the 'grandmas and grandpas'!
Fundraisers: Little Acorn is a non profit preschool and fundraisers are vital to keep our program strong. we currently have Kiggins Theatre, Usborne book efair, scholastic books, box tops and Scentsy running. The scensty orders need to be turned in the week; 100 percent of sales from scensty will go directly towards the school. We also have a parent photographer that has offering family portraits to the first 4 or 5 families that sign up. Pictures will be $150 for a 30 minute session on 11/8 from 9:00-11:00. Fliers will be in cubbies this week.
Trunk Or Treat: Trunk or Treat is this coming Sunday. It is a fun, community event hosted by the church. Little Acorn teachers will be there with a decorated trunk! Fliers were put in cubbies last week.
Word Wall: The letter this week is "E". Kids can bring anything starting with the letter "E"!

Dear Sunshine Families,
Last Week: We began our all unit. We went on a nature walk and collected twigs, pinecones and leaves. Check out our facebook page for pictures of the art we created last week with our found fall things. We were unable to complete all the projects I had planned last week so we will continue this week.
This week: We will finishing up the leaf prints we started last week. These look so neat and the kids are having a great time painting the leaves and seeing the print the leave on the paper. We will also use clear contact paper to create fall collages to hang on the window.
Social/emotional: We have a been really working hard in class on following directions during clean up time and our transition times; such as lining up and walking outside and in the restrooms when we are washing up for snack. We really stress the importance of safety during these times; it is my job to keep everyone safe and it is the kids job to keep themselves and their friends safe. We want to create an environment where everyone feels comfortable at school. We will continue stressing the importance of keeping hands to ourselves, talking to our friends and asking for teachers help if a conflict arises.
For many kids this is their first time in a classroom setting, it will take time to settle in and we are working each day to help the kids learn how to share, use their words and get along with each other. On Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday we will have a third teacher joining us from 9:45-11:45 to help support us. Teacher Sabrina has worked as a support in the classrooms for the last couple years and we are excited to have her!
It would be helpful if you could have a conversation at home about cleaning up when its clean up time, staying with the group when we are in the hall or outside and being kind to friends at school. Let them know that Vanessa, Sabrina and I are always there to help and support them!
Pumpkin Patch: Our first field trip of the year is here! We will not be in class on Thursday and Friday; we will meet at the farm at 9:15 so we can start our trip at 9:30. Field trips require parent transportation and supervision.
Trunk Or Treat: The church is hosting the annual "Trunk or Treat" this year on Sunday October 26th. This is a free community event. Church members will decorate their trunks and pass out treats. Little Acorn teachers will have a trunk decorated as well! More info will be put in cubbies soon!
Word Wall: Because this is a short week in class instead of a letter kids can bring in something related to fall. This could be something they have found outside or something they have at home. We will pick up next week with the letter "E".

Dear Sunshine Families,
Last Week: We had a lot of fun learning about the alphabet with Chicka Chicka Boom, Boom. We made chicka chicka trees with the letters o the kids names on them. We also wrote out names and counted the letters in them. As we make our way through the alphabet for word wall we will continue to develop our learning of letters.
This week: We will begin talking about Fall! The weather is still warm but signs of fall are everywhere; the mornings are chilly, the leaves are changing colors and falling and the squirrels are busy collecting food. We will collect leaves from around the school and make leaf rubbings. We will also make a fall collage to hang on our classroom windows. We will read Fletcher and The Falling Leaves, Let it Fall and A is for Autumn.
Carnival: Carnival was a huge success! Thank you to everyone that came and supported our school and everyone that volunteered to run booths, help set up and clean up. We couldn't have done it without your help!
Picture Day: Class pictures are this week! Our scheduled day is Tuesday, for those that Tuesday isn't a normal school day would you be able to come in at 9:30 to get individual pictures done and then we can do one class photos that will include everyone. If this doesn't work for people than I will add Monday as a picture day as well. Picture packets were put in cubbies last week. These will need to be returned by Oct 7th.
Pumpkin Patch: Our annual Farm trip is planned for Oct 16 and 17 at 9:30. This year we will be going to The Vancouver Pumpkin Patch at Velvet Acres. The cost is $5 per child and that includes a pumpkin! We will visit farm animal in the petting zoo, play in hay tunnels and take a hay ride out to the patch! If you'd like to pack a picnic lunch we can plan to eat lunch together after we are done at the farm. Please sign up on the sheet posted on the bulletin board to the left of the sign in sheets. We need an idea of how many are attending this fun trip!

This week: we will read Chicka Chicka Boom Boom and create some really fun projects. We will make a Chicka Chicka Boom Boom tree and put the letters of each kids name on them. We will also make a handprint tree. We will be doing a lot of name recognition activities in the coming weeks. We will also play a seek and find alphabet game in the classroom.
Carnival: Friday is our annual fall carnival! Bracelets are on sale now for unlimited games. Games mimion bowling, angry bird toss, mini golf, bean bag toss, bounce houses and temporary tattoos. We will serve hotdogs, popcorn and cotton candy. Bring in your favorite chili to the cook off and sample others!
Carnival is our biggest fund raiser of the year; proceeds go toward new classroom supplies and school wide activities. With your help we can make this event a success. Sign ups are out to help with our classroom game; applying temporary tattoos. This is a fun and easy way to get in those volunteer hours! We truly appreciate all the help we get.

Dear Sunshine Families,
Last week we finished up our 'I can' unit with a friendship painting. Two friends worked together to roll cans covered in paint around in a large box; these created really unique paintings!
With this week being the first week of fall we will jump into some favorite fall units! This week we will focus on a yummy fall fruit; apples! We have many apple crafts planned, we will taste test apples, make patterns with apples and we will make our own applesauce! If anyone has an apple tree and has extras apples to donate we would love to use homegrown apples this week.
During circle time we will read 'A' Was Once an Apple Pie, Ten Apples Up On Top and Apple Picking. We have been practicing our fall songs; Five Little Pumpkins Sitting on a Gate and Bats Are Flying.
Carnival is right around the corner; Oct 3rd! In addition to all the fun games we will have hot dogs, popcorn, cotton candy and a chili cook off!
Our annual Farm trip is planned for Oct 16 and 17 at 9:30. This year we will be going to The Vancouver Pumpkin Patch at Velvet Acres. The cost is $5 per child and that includes a pumpkin! We will visit farm animal in the petting zoo, play in hay tunnels and take a hay ride out to the patch!
Work Wall: The letter of the week is 'B'. Kids can bring in items that start with the letter 'B'. These can be toys, objects found around the home or pictures. Word wall items will be kept in the hamper during class and will go home each day.
Please remember to sign your child in each day; we will use the sign in sheet to take a quick count in case of an emergency. If we have to exit the building quickly we grab the sign in sheet clip board as we leave. This week we will have our first fire drill; we have one a month. We ring the alarm for a few seconds and then practice quickly exiting the building and lining up outside by the playground. We also practice an earthquake drill when we get back in the building.
We have begun to see the onset of cold and flu season. Vanessa and I have been diligent about sanitizing the classroom shelves, tables and toys. I want to ask everyone if they will wash kids hands before they come into class. Also, if you keep sick kids home please call Katie in the office or email me to let us know. Together we can work to keep everyone healthy!
For anyone that is interested in adding a day of preschool we have quite a few spots on Monday and Friday. If you would be interested in adding a day let Katie know.
Picture day is coming up; our scheduled day for pictures is Tuesday Oct 6th. I can add Monday for pictures to but wanted to get some feedback, for those that Tuesday isn't a normal school day would you be able to come in at 9:30 to get individual pictures done and then we can do one class photos that will include everyone. Sept 15-20
Dear Sunshine Families,
Last week went well; everyone seems to be adjusting and feeling more comfortable in class. There is a lot to learn these first few weeks, we really work on sitting quietly during circle, staying at the table during snack and lining up and walking in a line to get to the playground. For the first couple months of school we will use a rope that everyone holds onto while we make the trip to the playground. This will ensure that everyone is together and safe!
Bikes will be out this week and most days until the weather turns rainy. On windy days like we had last week we are unable to keep the bike fences from blowing down in the wind so we won't ride bikes those days. Kids need a helmet from home in order to ride bikes. Please make sure a name is on the helmet so we make sure the right helmet goes to each kiddo.
We still need quite a few family portraits; if you haven't sent one in this week would be a good time to do it!
We will be taking our first trip over to Kindred to sing to the 'grandmas and grandpas'. The folks living there love to see the kids and hear their songs. It's a great way for us to reach out and be a part of our local community! If anyone is interested in joining us, we leave at 10:00 and walk across the street as a school. We are usually gone for about a half an hour.
We had a lot of fun painting with cans. These pieces of art are on display in the hallway. We also used the cans outside to collect and sort rocks and pinecones, build castle and scoop and pour sand. We are going to continue with our 'I can' unit this week. We will also begin an All About Me unit this week. We will work on our family portrait projects, create a self portrait and do a name practice project!
We will begin word wall this week; for the next two weeks we will focus on letter A! Kids can bring in items that start with the letter 'A'. These can be toys, objects found around the home or pictures. We have a green hamper that word wall items will go in; it will be located right by the door. Word wall items will be kept in the hamper during class and will go home each day.
For anyone that is interested in adding a day of preschool we have quite a few spots on Monday and Friday. If you would be interested in adding a day let Katie know.

Sept 8-12
Dear Sunshine Families,
Our first two days last week were great! We spent time playing with all the toys and materials in the classroom and learning where they go when it’s clean up time. We played outside on the playground; digging in the sandbox, swinging and running. When the weather is nice we love to play and learn outside!
This is our first full week of school and for some the first day of school. Again, this week we will spend time in the classroom exploring the materials and getting familiar with the environment. This early in the year we spend quite a bit of time on our transition times. Cleaning up, using the restrooms and walking in a line are new for many of the kids so we will devote a lot of our day to working on these things.
We will continue working on our sunshine art projects this week. These are a two part project that we hope to have completed by the end of the week and displayed in the classroom.
We will also begin an ‘I can” unit. We will generate ideas about all the things we ‘can’ do at school and at home. I have been collecting soup cans in various sizes that we will use for an art project, to collect rocks and for sorting. We want to focus on all the great things kids already know how to do and everything they are able to do at preschool!
We are going to begin working on our family portrait project this week. These will be displayed in the classroom. The kids love having these pictures to look at during the day and share with their friends. It helps give them ownership in the classroom and helps develop friendships in class.
We are going to hold off on the word wall until next week, the kids are still adjusting to our days together. Next week, Sept 15-19, we will start with the letter ‘A’ and work our way through the alphabet. Kids are invited to bring in something that starts with the letter of the week. We have a green hamper that word wall items will go in; it will be located right by the door.
If you have not returned the registration paper work which includes a release form stating who can and cannot pick up your kids and the personal info we need those back as soon as possible. They can be downloaded and printed from the school website.
For anyone that is interested in adding a day of preschool we have quite a few spots on Monday and Friday. If you would be interested in adding a day let Katie know.
Picture days will be at the end of September this year. We will be doing individual portraits as well as a class photo. Pictures are usually held 2 days for each class and will begin the week of September 22. More info will come next week.
Thank you for letting us be a part of your child’s preschool experience! It’s going to be a great week!

Sept 4 and 5
Dear Sunshine Families,
This newsletter will typically go out Sunday evening for the week ahead. I will copy and paste the majority of the content into the email and will also send an attachment with the newsletter in its entirety. It is also posted to the school blog.
We are so excited to get this school year started! This is a short week, with two days in class. We will spend these days getting adjusted to our routine and getting to know one another. It’s not uncommon for kids to feel unsure or worried when they come to school for the first time, even if they have seemed excited. If parents and teachers all keep a positive attitude towards school it can make the transition smoother. Vanessa and I will take your lead at drop offs but it is often easier if parents say a quick goodbye and reassure kids that you will be back after school.
Our first two days we will create a cute sunshine project to decorate our classroom. We will also explore our art media center and sensory material, and play with play dough. We will give lots of free choice time the first few weeks of school. I’d like the kids to become familiar with the materials and toys in the classroom and feel comfortable to explore them in their own ways.
Please remember to sign your child in and out each day on the purple sign in sheets by the door. Also, the tuition box is located right by the sign in sheets. Tuition checks can be placed in there; they are collected shortly after class begins as well as right after class ends. The two bulletin boards outside the classroom door have the school newsletter and snack calendar posted each month as well as this newsletter, class lesson plans and the daily schedule.
Each child has a cubby in the hall. We will put all their art projects and classroom work as well as notices from the office in cubbies. Please be sure to check them often.
Next week we will jump right into a full week. We are asking that each family bring in a family portrait. We will be using these in a project so a copy that you do not need back would be best. We will begin working on the Word Wall next week, we will start with the letter ‘A’ and work our way through the alphabet. Kids are invited to bring in something that starts with the letter of the week. Toys are ok but it’s a great time to get creative! We have a word wall basket that items can be placed in; they will stay in the basket until the end of the day. Toys brought in for word wall will not be played with in class.
I had mentioned to some of you at open house that we have tricycles and scooters out on nicer days. They will not be out this week and possibly not next week either; I will keep you posted as to when they will be set up. We’d like to give the kids a couple weeks to comfortable with our outdoor space before we add bikes. Kids need to bring a helmet from home in order to ride bicycles. Helmets can be hung up with backpacks; just make sure they have a name in them.
I hope that wasn’t information overload! I am looking forward to a fun filled year together getting to know one another and making lasting memories. Feel free to contact me anytime, I’m available via email and love to chat after class. I don’t always have a lot of time before class as I have to get my kids to school.

Dear Sunshine Families
Monday is the Hough Parade. We will release from class at 11:30 so you have time to get down to Hough, at 19th and Daniel's. They start blocking streets off early so it can be tricky to find parking. I have usually been able to find parking on Franklin behind the school or on Broadway. We do a lot of walking so I suggest strollers or wagons if you think your kids will wear out. Plan to dress in green or in your purple sunshine class tie-dye.
Auction is quickly approaching. Check out the bulletin board down the main stairs for an idea of items that will be up for grabs and then plan to buy tickets to attend this fun event! It's a great night.
Art: The kids will make rainbow paintings, button collages and spin art.
Math/Science: We will cut green bell pepper in half and make shamrock prints with them
Literacy: We will read The Little leprechaun, Corduroy and Little Yellow and Little Blue.

Just a friendly reminder; please leave all food and drinks out of the playroom. We have some kids in the school with serious food allergies and we need the playroom to be a safe place for them to play. Thanks!
